HUM 112 Week 1 Discussion STR

Week One Discussion:  Science and Society and Technology

Read Chapters 21 and 22, listen to the lectures, look at the power points, and post an original reply to both of the following questions.  Post early in the week and reply to at least one classmate’s post with thoughtful details.   **Each weekly discussion is worth 20 points. Take your time and give us as much insight and detail as you can. **

  1.  Identify a scientific discovery or invention from the 1400s to 1600s and explain what impact it had on society at the time it was discovered or invented.  Refer to the text or a website as a source. Before posting, read over what your classmates have chosen and try to choose a different invention.  What would you have invented if you lived in this time period?
  2. Each week you will get to choose the most important “person of the week.”  For week one, your  choices are Caravaggio, an artist who uses light and dark in his paintings of biblical scenes for dramatic effect, and Rembrandt, who is known for his magnificent and realistic self-portraits.  Look at the pictures in our text and at these links and then choose one artist you feel is more important.

Week Two Discussion:  Versailles, Velázquez, and Rubens–Please answer all of the questions listed below–

  • Versailles contains symbols of power and absolute monarchy.  Pick a feature of the palace you admire and explain how you would use this as a setting for a computer program or a board game.   What would happen in this setting?   Who would be featured in the game (the king?  the queen?  noblemen?).

Week Four Discussion Beethoven: Art and Protest in the 1800s

Please respond to each of the following questions, using on line sources and the textbook for your response:

  1. Cite several lines from a Romantic poet/poem in our text and then find a landscape painting by Constable or Turner from this time period you think might illustrate those lines. Consider poems from Keats, Shelley, Wordsworth, Coleridge,  Bryon, or William Blake.
  2. Who is the Person of the Week for week four? Look over the list below of Romantic poets and writers and then tell us which one was the most important, in your opinion, and why as part of your original post.  Your choices are Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Keats, Shelley, or Byron.  Also, consider the contributions of Mary Shelley, writer of the original book called Frankensteinand Mary Godwin, an advocate for women’s rights. While some worked together (Wordsworth and Coleridge, Shelley and Byron, as well as Shelley and his wife, Mary), and some wrote alone (Keats and Blake–but Blake did work with his wife on his engravings that accompanied his poetry), each was noteworthy and changed the way poetry (and fiction) was written. Several were so famous that they were poetry “rock stars.”

Please respond to both of the following, using sources under the Explore heading and the textbook as the basis of your response:

  1. Select one (1) composition by Tchaikovsky that you enjoy.  Describe the music and subject matter and explain why you enjoy it and why it is still popular today.  Passionate nationalism, like Tchaikovsky’s for Russia, is a feature of Romantic art, music and late 1800’s art. Give an example of modern music (besides national anthems) that is characterized by nationalism.
  2. For week 6 your person of the week choices are between Emerson and Thoreau, American writers and philosophers (Transcendentalism) and Manet, Monet, Morisot, Renoir or Degas, artists who broke new ground in France with their painting techniques.  Look at the pictures and information in our text and online and then choose the one person you feel is most important.  Give us some details about your person and a picture to support your decision!

Please answer both questions using information in our text and online sources as needed.

  1. Describe a contemporary monument in your city or in local area.  Tell us the special significance it holds for the citizens of the city where it was erected.  Compare this monument to the Eiffel Tower in Paris:  should it keep the original design and structure, like the Tower, or be updated?
  2. Person of the Week for week 7: This week your choices are between several important artists whose works were groundbreaking and influential enough to create different art movements: Paul Cezanne, Vincent van Gogh, or Georges Seurat (Post-Impressionism) and Pablo Picasso (Cubism).  Who is the most important artist, in your opinion, and why? Support your choice with facts from the text and a picture.  Provide the link to the website with your reply.

  • While the idea of the soldier-poet may seem unlikely, the devastating effects of technological warfare during WWI produced memorable poetry. Pick one poem in our text or from a web source and describe the message the soldier-poet tries to convey, citing a few lines in your post.  Chose a poem not selected by another classmate.
  • Of the various authors, artists, and musicians who participated in the Harlem Renaissance, identify the person whose autograph you would most want, and explain the reasons why. Provide one (1) example that illustrates the reason you selected the person that you did.  Do not select someone a classmate has already chosen.

Twentieth Century African-American Artists; Post-modern Architecture

Please respond to one (1) of the following, using sources under the Explore heading as the basis of your response:

  • Choose two (2) of the following late 20th century African-American artists, and compare and contrast their art: Bearden, Lawrence, Basquiat, or Colescott. Describe specific elements of the works from the chosen artists that represent the multiplicity of the African-American experience. Identify one (1) of these works (or some other by an African American artist) that you would like in your workplace, and explain why.
  • Choose one (1) example of architecture that you believe best exemplifies the characteristic post-modern style. Provide a rationale for your selection, and describe two (2) of the features of post-modern style that you find intriguing.
